One of the challenges of understanding modern physics is that some of the concepts seem quite abstract when you're talking about microscopic objects outside the realm of everyday experience. The standard explanation is based on the historical development of quantum mechanics between 1900 and 1930. In interpreting the conceptual development of quantum physics Kumar draws on contemporary reportage, biographies of some of the leading figures, their autobiographies and their personal letters. Just like one should start from pseudo-Riemannian geometry in systematically developing General Relativity, one should start from von Neumann's quantum logics in systematically developing Quantum Theory. During that time there were a series of crises in physics. How needed is a better conceptual foundation for QM ? Of the great discoveries of all time: why the world needs quantum mechanics. Classes are over for the semester, and I've put together the lecture notes for my undergraduate “Quantum Mechanics for Mathematicians” course, which are available here. His talk was featured at the The work of developing string theory (or any other single unified “theory of everything”) was an undertaking that took many years and a number of scientists—beginning with Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Through a combination of real world examples and a few helpful animations, Greene managed to sufficiently explain the concepts of physics without the math that most would find daunting.
